Spotcap hosts a series of charity breakfasts in support of CoppaFeel! The UK’s only educational breast cancer awareness charity.
If you happened to enter the Spotcap office on any given Friday in December, you might have been tempted to indulge in a smorgasbord of international delicacies – from Spanish tortilla to French style crepes.
This month, a group of volunteers from the Berlin office hosted a series of charity breakfasts, with all proceeds going to CoppaFeel!, a breast cancer awareness charity in the UK.
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in the UK and accounted for 15% of all new cancer cases in 2015.
CoppaFeel! is the UK’s only educational breast cancer awareness charity. They are on a mission to stamp out late detection of breast cancer. They exist to ensure all breast cancers are diagnosed early and correctly by encouraging regular check-ups from a young age, educating about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and empowering people to seek advice from a doctor if symptoms arise.
CoppaFeel! is near and dear to all our hearts, but is particularly important to Lucy Aerts, a member of the Spotcap team in the UK. After discovering a cancerous lump in her breast at the age of 27 which required surgery, she knew she had to do something to educate women (and men: although quite rare approximately 390 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year) about the importance of early detection.
She is now a volunteer Boobette for CoppaFeel!! which means she visits schools, offices, festivals and even appears on TV to talk about breast cancer and educate young people about the signs and symptoms, and to show them how to check themselves.
“There is still a misconception that it only affects people at a older age. I had my cancerous lump removed at the age of 27 and if I had not discovered this early, I would have had to go through a lot of treatment. Early detection is the best form of defence,” says Lucy.
Her most recent charitable initiative saw her participate in the Dalai Lama Himalaya Trek, where she traversed across India in 12 days, climbed three different mountains and reached the summit at 3448M on the final day. Her efforts raised a total of £1250 for the organisation.
As for the Berlin team, our breakfast initiative not only brought people together but, also helped raise a total of €600 for CoppaFeel!, in a great demonstration of team spirit, appetite and philanthropy.
